Air fryer Fish and Chips recipe

fish and chips

The History of Fish and Chips

A slathering of batter, some chunky chips and a piping hot fillet of fish – this is the classic recipe that has captured the hearts and taste buds of countless people around the world. But there is more to this popular meal than meets the eye: it has a fascinating and colorful history.

While it isn’t certain who first had the brilliant idea of pairing fried potatoes with a battered piece of fish, we do know that this combo quickly became a favourite among England’s working classes during the second half of the 19th century. The rapid development of trawl fishing and the expansion of railways made it possible to quickly transport fresh fish from coastal ports to heavily populated cities and industrial towns, where it was consumed by factory and mill workers. To keep costs down, these early customers often wrapped their fish and chips in old newspapers – hence the phrase “today’s paper is tomorrow’s food.”

Today, cod and haddock are still a common choice for fish and chip lovers, but plaice, hake and pollock also work well. If you prefer a more sustainable option, you can also go for megrim (a flatfish with a delicate flavor and firm texture) or lemon sole. And, if you’re feeling really virtuous, a handful of mushy peas will help balance out the richness of the deep-fried fish and chips. In short, there are few dishes that can compare to the simple pleasure of a good plate of fish and chips.

How to cook fish and chips in air fryer ?

Fish and chips is a classic midweek meal, now made even more easy and fuss free thanks to the air fryer. This crispy fish dinner is a great alternative to deep frying, while still making a satisfying and delicious dinner that is perfect for the family. This breaded cod fillet is flaky on the inside and crispy and golden on the outside – while being a healthy option with very little added oil.

Preheat the air fryer to 400°F (approx. 200°C) while you prepare the fries and bread the fish. Place the fries into the basket of the air fryer and cook for 10min, shaking/turning halfway through cooking. While the fries are cooking, make the fish: dredge the cod fillets first in the flour (tap off excess), then the egg, finally the breadcrumbs; pat each piece well to help the coating stick.

Once the fries are cooked, add the fish to the air fryer and cook for 15min, turning them over halfway through the cooking time. Serve immediately with lemon wedges, coleslaw and tartar sauce if desired.

Alternatively, you can also cook this dish in the oven. Pre-heat the oven to 230°C/210°C fan/gas 8 and pour the rapeseed oil into a roasting tin. Tip in the sliced potatoes and season with salt and pepper. Cook for 20-25 mins, turning halfway through, until crisp and cooked through.

The best potatoes to use for this recipe are the kind with a high starch content, like Idaho or Russet. Avoid any with a lot of moisture in the skins as they will become watery during cooking.

TIPS FOR MAKING COD IN THE AIR FRYER

  1. Don’t overfill the basket of your air fryer. The strips of fish shouldn’t be touching. So cook in two batches if required.
  2. Take as much moisture out of the fish prior to making breading. Dab the fish with an absorbent kitchen towel to eliminate all moisture. When the fish gets humid, it could become steamy, meaning the breadcrumbs may be soggy, rather than crisp.
  3. Make sure to pre heat your air fryer. This ensures that the temperature and air flow will be at the correct temperature when you cook the fish. If you don’t heat it prior to cooking, the food, it may cook unevenly.
